When it comes to respiratory infections in pigeons, terms like ornithosis, mycoplasmosis, and chlamydia are common. Breeders often call it “thick heads” or a “dry cold.” The throat and bronchi become inflamed, usually noticeable by a reddish throat. Increasingly, pigeons also show symptoms through watery eyes — and in recent years especially, through herpes eye disease.

A particular form of respiratory infection, the so-called “dry cold,” often appears after hot-weather flights. During the summer, strong southeastern winds and extreme heat can literally dry pigeons out while flying. It’s much like riding a bike against the wind for an hour in scorching heat — your mouth dries out completely.

For pigeons, the signs become clear when they start sneezing at night.

You might hear “achoo” or a rasping sound from different birds, with some even wheezing. Their nostrils are often slightly red, and a reddish throat further confirms the diagnosis of “dry cold.”

Training flights around the loft decrease noticeably, and performance suffers dramatically.
